This fact sheet from the Natgional Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma, and Mental Health defines mental health coercion as an intimate partner using a person’s mental health, or accusations about it, to control, harm, or isolate them. It describes tactics such as dismissing reports of abuse, interfering with treatment or medication, and threatening to disclose mental health information to authorities or family members. It presents findings from a survey of callers to the National Domestic Violence Hotline and discusses possible effects on survivors’ health, access to support, finances, and relationships with their children. It also provides links to domestic violence, sexual assault, and mental health support resources.
This project is funded under a grant contract with the State of Tennessee,
Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
