Kratom is a plant-based substance that interacts with opioid receptors in the brain, acting as a stimulant in low doses and mimicking opioids in higher doses. It is legal in most U.S. states and easily accessible to teens through gas stations, vape shops, online retailers, and social media. Despite being marketed as a natural remedy, Kratom poses serious risks, including addiction, withdrawal symptoms, liver damage, seizures, psychosis, and overdose, especially for adolescents with developing brains. Parents are encouraged to educate their children about its dangers, monitor purchases and online activity, and seek professional help if their child is using Kratom.
This project is funded under a grant contract with the State of Tennessee,
Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
