Temptation as a Key Driver Between Affective States and Usage Outcomes of Problematic Usage of the Internet

This study examines how mood, stress, and temptation influence problematic use of gaming, pornography, social networking, and online shopping. Researchers assessed 900 adults over 14 days and categorized their internet use as non-problematic, risky, or pathological. Temptation emerged as the strongest immediate predictor of online activity, while pleasure and emotional relief reinforced continued use. Participants with more severe problematic use reported greater stress, poorer mood, longer use times, and increased neglect of work, relationships, and other responsibilities. The findings suggest that prevention and treatment approaches may benefit from focusing on managing urges and addressing the reinforcing effects of online activities.
