This CDC report examines frequent mental distress and physical inactivity among adults ages 18–29 using national and state-level survey data from 2012 through 2024. Frequent mental distress is defined as experiencing poor mental health on at least 14 of the previous 30 days. Both measures increased over the full study period, although recent annual trends showed declines. The report discusses approaches that may support mental health and physical activity, including social support groups, time in nature, and safe places to be active. The findings rely on self-reported information and do not establish cause-and-effect relationships.
This project is funded under a grant contract with the State of Tennessee,
Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
