Pharmacogenomics examines how genetic differences influence a person’s response to medications. This resource explains how testing may help healthcare providers consider medication choices, doses, and the risk of certain adverse reactions. Illustrations show how differences in medication processing can affect treatment response. Examples include antidepressants and medications used for cancer, high cholesterol, and HIV. It emphasizes that testing cannot identify a perfect medication and that other health and lifestyle factors remain important. Privacy, access, and the need for research involving diverse populations are also discussed.
This project is funded under a grant contract with the State of Tennessee,
Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
