A University of Michigan study found that many adults age 50 and older remain unaware of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, despite its nationwide availability and growing use. The findings indicate that awareness, comfort with using the service, and perceived barriers vary across demographic groups, with privacy concerns remaining common. The study suggests that healthcare providers, families, and community organizations have an important role in increasing awareness of 988 and educating older adults about available mental health crisis resources. Researchers conclude that improving public awareness and understanding of the lifeline could increase its use and strengthen suicide prevention efforts among older adults.
