Anxiety involves excessive, difficult-to-control worry that may interfere with daily activities and can occur during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Untreated anxiety during pregnancy may be associated with miscarriage, premature delivery, low birth weight, postpartum mood disorders, and some developmental concerns, although anxiety alone is unlikely to increase the risk of birth defects. Symptoms may include sleep difficulties, fatigue, irritability, poor concentration, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, digestive problems, and panic attacks. Treatment options include counseling, relaxation techniques, mindfulness, exercise, and medication when appropriate. Many anxiety medications have not been associated with an increased risk of birth defects, and some may also be used while breastfeeding under medical guidance. Individuals are advised to consult a healthcare provider before changing medication or treatment.
