Marijuana is a psychoactive drug derived from the Cannabis sativa plant that affects the brain and body through its primary active ingredient, THC. This fact sheet explains how marijuana is used, its short- and long-term physical and mental health effects, and the risks associated with regular use, including impaired judgment, dependence, and withdrawal. It also describes common forms of marijuana, including concentrates and related cannabis products, and discusses overdose considerations. The publication concludes with an overview of marijuana's legal status under federal law and the approved medical uses of certain cannabis-derived and synthetic cannabinoid medications in the United States.
