Despite the public health imperative to improve coordinated management of medical, mental health, and substance use–related conditions, the U.S. health system has historically segregated the financing, organization, and delivery of behavioral health services from general medical care. Evidence demonstrates that integrating care for populations with co-occurring conditions can improve health outcomes.
