Integrating Physical and Behavioral Health — Addressing Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders with Chronic Physical Illnesses - SAMHSA

Medical comorbidities are highly prevalent in these populations and represent the leading cause of premature mortality among those with severe mental illness. Despite the public health imperative to improve coordinated management of medical, mental health, and substance use–related conditions, the U.S. health system has historically segregated the financing, organization, and delivery of behavioral health services from general medical care. Evidence demonstrates that integrating care for populations with co-occurring conditions can improve health outcomes.

This report describes the evolving landscape of integrated care in the United States, including established frameworks that emphasize interdisciplinary teams, clear communication systems, and care coordination across providers.
