Pharmacogenetic testing examines genetic differences that may influence how a person responds to certain medications. This resource explains how results may help healthcare providers consider medication choices, doses, and potential side effects. Examples include antidepressants and medications used for several other health conditions. It describes blood, saliva, and cheek-swab collection, along with preparation and possible testing risks. Results are considered alongside medical history, other medications, and additional factors when making treatment decisions. It also clarifies that pharmacogenetic testing cannot diagnose a condition or predict whether someone will develop one.
This project is funded under a grant contract with the State of Tennessee,
Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
