Physical activity can help older adults maintain independence, improve physical health, and support emotional well-being. This National Institute on Aging resource explains aerobic, muscle-strengthening, and balance activities, with examples and safety tips for each. It describes how regular movement may reduce fall risk, support memory and attention, and help reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. Guidance addresses adapting activity for chronic conditions, including arthritis, chronic pain, diabetes, and dementia. Practical suggestions include starting gradually, setting realistic goals, overcoming barriers, and finding social support to stay active. Older adults, family members, and caregivers can use the information to support conversations with health care providers and develop activity routines suited to individual abilities.
