Evaluation and Treatment of Compulsive Sexual Behavior: Current limitations and potential strategies

This narrative review examines the history, prevalence, comorbidities, neurobiological theories, diagnosis, and treatment of compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD). The authors describe psychotherapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, as the preferred treatment approach while noting that SSRIs and naltrexone are sometimes used off-label. They recommend integrating biological, psychological, social, and sexual-health considerations into individualized care. The review also identifies continuing uncertainty regarding CSBD’s classification, symptom measurement, and treatment effectiveness. The authors call for more representative studies, stronger treatment-evaluation methods, and improved clinician training. Because this is a narrative review rather than a systematic clinical guideline, its treatment conclusions should be interpreted cautiously.
