This article is a research-based resource designed to help recognize warning signs of suicidal risk that are specific to autistic individuals. It highlights that traditional warning signs used for the general population may not adequately address the unique experiences and needs of autistic people, and misunderstanding these signs can lead to harm. The document presents a list of ten autism-specific warning signs, such as sudden withdrawal, inability to communicate distress, increased self-harm, and hopelessness, each illustrated with scenarios and supported by emerging research. It emphasizes the importance of observing changes from an individual's usual behavior and encourages collaborative, informed intervention rather than relying solely on general guidelines. The resource was developed by a team including autistic individuals, researchers, and practitioners, and provides additional references and tools for further support.

Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
