The ASAM/AAAP Clinical Practice Guideline on the Management of Stimulant Use Disorder

The American Society of Addiction Medicine and American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry guideline provides evidence-based recommendations for assessing and treating stimulant use disorder, including problems involving cocaine and methamphetamine. It identifies contingency management, which uses incentives to reinforce treatment participation and positive behavior changes, as a primary treatment approach alongside other behavioral therapies. It also evaluates medications that may be prescribed off-label, with recommendations based on available evidence and individual patient needs. Additional guidance addresses stimulant intoxication and withdrawal, co-occurring conditions, and considerations for adolescents, young adults, and pregnant or postpartum patients.
