This document, part of MADD’s Power of Parents® series, provides guidance for parents to prevent underage alcohol and cannabis use through early, frequent, and intentional conversations. It emphasizes setting clear family rules, agreeing on consequences for violations, and fostering open communication to guide teens’ choices effectively. The guide highlights the risks of underage drinking and cannabis use, including addiction, impaired decision-making, legal consequences, and long-term health impacts. It offers strategies for engaging teens, such as choosing the right time to talk, listening without judgment, and avoiding lectures or debates. Parents are encouraged to share facts about substance use, enforce fair consequences, and emphasize the importance of the 21 minimum drinking age law.
This project is funded under a grant contract with the State of Tennessee,
Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
