2025 State-by-State SMI/SED Estimates is a SAMHSA statistical resource presenting estimated numbers of adults ages 18 and older with serious mental illness and children ages 9–17 with serious emotional disturbance. It includes state-level tables, including Tennessee, with population figures and estimated ranges. The adult estimates apply a standardized prevalence rate, while the child estimates account for poverty levels and different thresholds of functional impairment. Methodology notes explain the calculations and population data sources. These estimates support mental health service planning and represent calculated population estimates rather than counts of diagnosed individuals.
This project is funded under a grant contract with the State of Tennessee,
Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
