Cannabis Detection Among Overdose Deaths — United States, 2021–2025

This page from a CDC report examines how often cannabis was detected in overdose deaths in 31 states and the District of Columbia from January 2021 through June 2025. Cannabis was detected in 21.0% of the deaths studied, but was listed as contributing to death in 0.8%. Detection was most common among adolescents aged 12–17 and generally decreased with age. The report distinguishes finding cannabis in toxicology results from determining that it caused or contributed to an overdose death.
