This article examines the impact of legalized sports betting on gambling disorder diagnoses in the United States. It finds that in states where sports betting has been legalized, the quarterly rate of diagnosed gambling disorder rose by about 61% from 2018 to 2026, while rates fell by 29% in states that did not legalize sports betting. Adults aged 30 to 49 had the highest rates, but the largest proportional increase was among adults aged 18 to 29. Diagnosis rates increased for both men and women, with men under 50 showing a much higher prevalence. The study used data from over 197 million U.S. adults and highlights that the true prevalence of gambling disorder is likely underestimated due to under-recognition in clinical care. The findings suggest a strong association between the legalization of sports betting and rising rates of diagnosed gambling disorder, especially among younger adults and men.
