Talking to children about drugs and alcohol is essential and should start early, continuing as they grow. Use simple language to explain the dangers and consequences of substance use, such as its impact on health, memory, and decision-making. Create opportunities for open conversations, like during meals or while discussing real-life events, news stories, or media portrayals of substance use. Praise children to build their self-esteem and encourage them to make healthy choices while preparing them to handle peer pressure. Avoid reacting in anger, making assumptions, or providing false information; instead, listen actively and educate them about risks and alternatives. Regularly reinforce your message and show your support to help them grow up drug-free.
This project is funded under a grant contract with the State of Tennessee,
Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
