This resource provides guidance for family members and friends who are concerned about a loved one’s gambling. It recommends using calm, specific, and nonjudgmental communication while listening carefully and offering practical support. Examples demonstrate how blaming or confrontational statements can be replaced with clearer and more constructive language. Possible treatment goals include stopping gambling completely or establishing individualized limits in collaboration with a qualified clinician. It also emphasizes that loved ones can offer support and establish boundaries but cannot make another person change.
This project is funded under a grant contract with the State of Tennessee,
Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
