Helping Children Cope with the Serious Illness or Death of a Companion Animal provides guidance for parents and caregivers supporting children through a pet’s illness or death. It describes how children’s understanding of death and expressions of grief vary with age and development. Suggestions emphasize honest conversations, clear language, reassurance, and allowing children to express their feelings. The guide also addresses explaining euthanasia, burial, and cremation in age-appropriate ways. Additional guidance includes maintaining routines, creating memorials, and considering when the family may be ready for another pet.
This project is funded under a grant contract with the State of Tennessee,
Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
