This resource guides crisis center workers in identifying and supporting autistic individuals during crisis situations. It highlights unique autistic traits such as sensory sensitivities, literal thinking, difficulties with emotions, and social challenges. The toolkit provides practical strategies for communication, including asking clear questions, allowing extra processing time, and avoiding metaphors or emotional language. It emphasizes the importance of individualized support, helping autistic callers develop coping skills, distraction techniques, and safety plans. The overall goal is to reduce unintentional harm and ensure autistic people receive understanding and effective crisis support.
This project is funded under a grant contract with the State of Tennessee,
Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
