Extreme heat can affect both physical and mental health, including increasing the risk of heat-related illness, worsening existing mental health conditions, and contributing to substance use challenges. This document helps readers recognize the signs of emotional distress, identify who is at greater risk, and understand when to seek support. Practical strategies and trusted resources for staying safe, coping with extreme heat, and protecting overall well-being are shared. Readers are connected to national crisis and disaster support services, including the SAMHSA Disaster Distress Helpline, for additional assistance when it is needed.
This project is funded under a grant contract with the State of Tennessee,
Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
