SAMHSA’s Anger Management for Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health Clients: A Cognitive–Behavioral Therapy Manual guides clinicians in delivering a structured, 12-week anger management program. It provides detailed instructions for 90-minute weekly sessions, suggested remarks for group leaders, teaching materials, and between-session exercises. The approach combines relaxation techniques, strategies for changing unhelpful thoughts, and communication skills to help participants manage anger and reduce aggressive behavior. Sessions address anger triggers, individualized anger control plans, assertiveness, conflict resolution, and the influence of family experiences. This manual is intended for use with the companion Participant Workbook.
This project is funded under a grant contract with the State of Tennessee,
Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
