TIP 12: Combining Substance Abuse Treatment With Intermediate Sanctions for Adults in the
Criminal Justice System  112 pg book

This TIP provides the substance abuse treatment and criminal justice systems with information to enhance the linkage of treatment services for offenders assigned to intermediate sanctions. Planning, policy, ethical, and legal issues are discussed.
TIP 13: The Role of Current Status of Patient Placement Criteria in the Treatment of Substance Abuse Disorders  74 pg book
This TIP will help readers understand what patient placement criteria are and learn from the experiences of others who have helped develop currently used criteria.  It also lays the groundwork for a concerted effort to develop national uniform patient placement criteria (UPPC).  The many advantages of adopting UPPC are discussed in this TIP along with  ‘how to’ suggestions and strategies for developing national support for UPPC.

TIP 15: Treatment for HIV-Infected Alcohol and Other Drug Abusers.  
This TIP provides recommendations and guidelines for quality care for AOD abusers who are in treatment and who are infected with HIV. The guidelines identify a spectrum of core services and treatment approaches that ideally should be available to all HIV-infected AOD abusers, regardless of the setting in which they receive care. 171 pages.  For more updated version see Tip 37.
TIP 16: Alcohol and Other Drug Screening Of Hospitalized Trauma Patients  96 pg book
The TIP provides guidelines for addressing positive results of screens.  The purpose of screening is twofold:  to improve the medical management of these patients during hospitalization and injury rehabilitation and to help identify a subgroup of patients with untreated AOD problems who can be referred to treatment if appropriate.  The TIP is targeted both to professionals in the treatment field, who may not be familiar with traumatic injuries, and to medical professionals, who may be considering implementing screening programs in their facilities.

This TIP will help criminal justice and AOD treatment systems promote the acceptance of AOD treatment for criminal offenders and enhance its effectiveness. The CSAT Criminal Justice Treatment Planning Chart is included in an appendix to assist policymakers and planners. 116 pages

This TIP, which summarizes the latest advice and recommends protocols for dealing with the threat of tuberculosis (TB) in the AOD setting, is intended to encourage collaboration among State, local, and private agencies. The TIP includes guidelines for AOD treatment providers about cooperating with public health officials and others in preventing the transmission of TB in AOD treatment facilities. 132 pages

TIP 20: Matching Treatment to Patient Needs in Opioid Substitution Therapy  134 pg book
Persons with addictions to opioids often need a broad range of services in addition to opioid substitution therapy. Research has shown that providing these services as part of the therapy program greatly increases retention in treatment and improves outcomes. This TIP offers guidelines to providers who deliver quality treatment to opiate-addicted persons.

This TIP introduces a new definition of diversion, concentrating on diverting youth already involved with the juvenile justice system. This TIP presents current knowledge about the use of levo-alpha-acetyl-methadol (LAAM), an opioid agonist medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1993. This TIP describes the medication itself, its modes of action, possible side effects, and interactions with other medications. Separate chapters describe treatment planning, program administration, and regulatory and ethical issues. 66 pages

TIP 25: Substance Abuse Treatment and Domestic Violence  152 pg book
Designed for treatment providers, this TIP presents an introduction to the field of domestic violence. It offers providers useful information on the role of substance abuse in domestic violence—both among the men who batter and the women who are battered. Useful techniques for detecting and eliciting such information are supplied, along with ways to modify treatment to ensure victims' safety and to stop the cycle of violence in both parties' lives. Legal issues are discussed and the TIP provides a blueprint for a more integrated system of care that would enhance treatment for both problems.
TIP 26: Substance Abuse Among Older Adults  173 pg book
Adults age 60 and older tend to be overlooked in discussions of substance abuse, resulting in thousands of older adults who need treatment and do not receive it. This TIP recommends practices for identifying, screening and assessing, and treating alcohol and prescription drug abuse among older adults. TIP 26 is designed for substance abuse treatment providers, primary care clinicians, social workers, and senior center staff.
TIP 27: Comprehensive Case Management for Substance Abuse Treatment  121 pg book  
A history of case management, including models of case management with substance abusers, is provided in this TIP. The TIP also covers case management for clients with special needs, funding case management in managed care environments, and application of case management to substance abuse treatment.
TIP 28: Naltrexone and Alcoholism Treatment  94 pg book
Naltrexone therapy, in combination with psychosocial programs, can improve alcoholism treatment outcomes. In many patients, naltrexone reduces the urge to drink, giving the patient the opportunity to learn to stay sober without it. This TIP will help clinicians and treatment providers use naltrexone safely and effectively to enhance patient care and improve treatment outcomes.
TIP 29: Substance Use Disorder Treatment For People With Physical and Cognitive Disabilities  156 pg book
People with physical and cognitive disabilities are more likely to have a substance use disorder and less likely to get effective treatment for it than those without such a coexisting disability. This TIP explains the issues in treating people with coexisting disabilities, discusses how to screen for coexisting disorders and how to adapt substance use screening for clients who have a disability, and examines treatment planning and counseling.
TIP 30: Continuity of Offender Treatment for Substance Use Disorders From Institution to Community  121 pg book
This TIP presents guidelines for ensuring continuity of care as offenders with substance use disorders move from incarceration to the community. The guidelines are for treatment providers in prisons, jails, community corrections, and other institutions, as well as community providers.
TIP 31: Screening and Assessing Adolescents for Substance Use Disorder  136 pg book
Substance use can disrupt a young person's ability to meet developmental tasks and impair identity development, a central theme of adolescence. This TIP presents information on identifying, screening, and assessing substance use in adolescents. Since adolescents differ from adults physiologically and emotionally, it is important for professionals who come into regular contact with youth to recognize the signs of substance use. The TIP focuses on the most current procedures and instruments for detecting substance abuse among adolescents, conducting comprehensive assessments, and beginning treatment planning. Replaces TIP 3
TIP 32: Treatment of Adolescents With Substance Use Disorders  126 pg book
This TIP presents information on substance use disorder treatment for adolescent clients. Adolescents differ from adults physiologically and emotionally as they make the transition from child to adult and require treatment adapted to their needs. In order to treat this population effectively, treatment providers must address the issues that play significant roles in an adolescent's life, such as cognitive, emotional, physical, social, and moral development, and family and peer environment. The TIP focuses on ways to specialize treatment for adolescents, as well as on common and effective program components and approaches being used today. Replaces TIP 4
TIP 33: Treatment for Stimulant Abuse Disorders  226 pg book
Stimulant use has risen dramatically in the United States over the last 20 years. This TIP explains the nature and treatment of stimulant use disorders. The TIP also reviews what is currently known about treating the medical, psychiatric, and substance abuse/dependence problems associated with cocaine and methamphetamine use.
TIP 34: Brief Interventions and Brief Therapies for Substance Abuse  234 pg book
This TIP is intended primarily for counselors and therapists working in the substance abuse treatment field, but parts of it will be of value to other audiences, including health care workers, social services providers, clergy, teachers, and criminal justice personnel.  IN fact those portions of this TIP dealing with the brief interventions will be of use to any professional service provider who may need to make an intervention to help persons with substance abuse disorders alter their use patterns or seek treatment.  However, brief therapy should only be practiced by those who are properly qualified, educated, and licensed.
TIP 35: Enhancing Motivation for Change in Substance Abuse Treatment  243 pg book 
This TIP embraces a fundamentally different way to conceptualize motivation.  In this approach, motivation is viewed as a dynamic and changeable state rather than a static trait.  This TIP shows how clinicians can influence this change process by developing a therapeutic relationship, one that respects and builds on the client’s autonomy and, at the same time, makes the treatment counselor a participant in the change process.  The TIP also describes different motivational interventions that can be used at all stages of change, from precontemplation an preparation to action and maintenance.
TIP 36: Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons with Child Abuse and Neglect Issues 181 pg book
This TIP examines treatment issues for both adult survivors of child abuse or neglect and adults in treatment who may be abusing or neglecting their own children.

TIP 37: Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons with HIV/AIDS  316 pg book
This TIP is a revision of TIP 15, Treatment for HIV-Infected Alcohol and Other Drug Abusers.  It is intended to help a wide range of providers become familiar with both substance abuse and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and to foster a better understanding of the roles of other providers. Replaces TIP 15

TIP 38: Integrating Substance Abuse Treatment and Vocational Services
This TIP presents a fundamental rethinking of the importance of integrating vocational services into substance abuse treatment planning.  The goal of this TIP is to show how employment can play a key role in recovery from substance abuse disorders.  In the wake of legislative reforms and limited resources, the TIP discusses establishing a referral relationship with other agencies to better meet client needs.  Not only will clients receive services in areas outside the alcohol and drug counselors’ area of expertise, but active referrals may help the client stay in treatment, and agencies can also share resources and funding to provide services more efficiently.  Policy and funding issues also are discussed, as are legal issues.
 

TIP 39: Substance Abuse Treatment and Family Therapy
This TIP addresses how substance abuse affects the entire family and how substance abuse treatment providers can use principles from family therapy to change the interactions among family members. The TIP provides basic information about family therapy for substance abuse treatment professionals, and basic information about the models, techniques, ad principles of family therapy, with special attention to the stages of motivation as well as to treatment and recovery. Discussion also focuses on clinical decision making and training, supervision, cultural considerations, special populations, funding, and research. The TIP further identifies future directions for both research and clinical practice. 

TIP 40: Clinical Guidelines for the Use of Buprenorphine in the Treatment of Opioid Addiction
This TIP provides consensus- and evidence-based treatment guidance for the use of Buprenorphine, a new option for the treatment of opioid addiction. The goal of the TIP is to provide physicians with information they can use to make practical and informed decisions about the use of Buprenorphine to treat opioid addiction. These guidelines address the pharmacology and physiology of opioids, opioid addiction, and treatment with Buprenorphine; describe patient assessment and the choice of opioid addiction treatment options; provide detailed treatment protocols for opioid withdrawal and maintenance therapy with Buprenorphine; and include information on the treatment of special populations, e.g., pregnant women, adolescents, and polysubstance users. This TIP represents another step by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) toward its goal of bringing national leaders together to improve substance use disorder treatment in the United States.

TIP 41: Substance Abuse Treatment: Group Therapy
This TIP presents an overview of the role and efficacy of group therapy in substances abuse treatment planning. This TIP offers research and clinical findings and distills them into practical guidelines for practitioners of group therapy modalities in the field of substance abuse treatment. The TIP describes effective types of group therapy and offers a theoretical basis for group therapy's effectiveness in the treatment of substance use disorders. This work also will be a useful guide to supervisors and trainers of beginning counselors, as well as to experienced counselors. Finally, the Tip is meant to provide researchers and clinicians with a guide to sources of information and topics for further inquiry. 

TIP 42: Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons With Co-Occurring Disorders
This TIP
revises TIP 9, Assessment and Treatment of  Patients With Coexisting Mental Illness and Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse. The revised TIP provides information about new substance use and mental disorders and captures the state-of-the-art in the treatment of people with co-occurring disorders. The TIP focuses on what the substance abuse treatment clinician needs to know and provides that information in an accessible manner. The TIP synthesizes knowledge and grounds it in the practical realities of clinical cases and real situations so the reader will come away with increased knowledge, encouragement, and resourcefulness in working with clients with co-occurring disorders. Replaces TIP 9

TIP 43: Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Addiction in Opioid Treatment Programs

Opioid addiction is a problem with high costs to individuals, families, and society. This TIP provides a detailed description of medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction, including optional approaches such as comprehensive maintenance treatment, detoxification, and medically supervised withdrawal.

TIP 44: Substance Abuse Treatment for Adults in the Criminal Justice System

Research consistently demonstrates a strong connection between criminal activity and substance abuse; research also finds that involvement in substance abuse treatment reduces recidivism for offenders who use drugs. This TIP presents clinical guidelines to assist counselors in dealing with problems that routinely arise because of their clients’ status in the criminal justice system.

TIP 45: Detoxification and Substance Abuse Treatment 

This Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) is a revision of TIP 19, Detoxification From Alcohol and Other Drugs. TIP 45 was developed by a panel of experts and it provides up-to-date information about the role of detoxification in the continuum of services for individuals with substance use disorders.  Replaces TIP 19
TIP 46: Substance Abuse: Administrative Issues in Outpatient Treatment
This Quick Guide will help administrators in outpatient treatment programs address management and human resources issues, preparing a program to treat diverse clients, outpatient treatment financing options and strategies, performance improvement, and outcomes monitoring. 
TIP 47: Clinical Issues in Intensive Outpatient Treatment
This Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP), Substance Abuse: Clinical Issues in Intensive Outpatient Treatment, addresses the practical needs of treatment providers as they design and implement IOT programs. The TIP provides specific information on the principles of intensive outpatient treatment; services and treatment models; modifications for distinct population groups; culturally competent treatment; screening and patient placement criteria; counseling methods and techniques, including involvement of families; and the continuum of care. The TIP also covers such important issues as how to improve early retention, provide the appropriate length and intensity of services, provide the most promising mix of wrap-around services for positive client outcomes, and arrange ongoing care in the community
